Government plans to allow export of Bali starlings

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry wants to permit the export of the critically endangered Bali starlings for the pet trade according to reports.

The Director of Biodiversity Conservation of the Directorate General of Forest Protection and Nature Conservation of the Ministry of Environment Bambang Dahono Aji said he wanted to begin export in 2016.

He said that because Indonesia is a signatory to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), additional approval was necessary.

The plan would entail using the 88 current registered captive breeders in Central Java to sell 90 percent of bred starlings and return 10 percent to the wild.

He said that there were about 50 breeding pairs in the West Bali National Park and the export of the birds would raise awareness to the critically endangered species.
